review: casket creek

Although Mark Straite and Ron Hale, aka Straite to Hale Productions, don’t have a background in the film industry, they have created one of the most cinematic, Western-themed haunted houses that we have ever seen: “Casket Creek”.

With a modest budget and the power of their imaginations, Strait and Hale created an actual Old West town within the yard of an Alta Loma home, complete with a saloon, hotel, casket shop, and outhouses - all of which you walk through to experience a variety of sets and scares. The scale and design are impressive, like the life-size wooden water towers and two-story flats that loom over guests. It’s as if the structures of Knott’s Ghost Town were now their own individual haunted houses.

As you cruise through each building there are various triggers, animatronics, and scare actors that bring to life the sets. The sound and lighting design greatly enhance the spooky entertainment of this attraction. In addition, we really enjoyed the Easter egg of the handmade wooden signs that point in the directions of fellow local haunts - a nod to the comradery that exists among Southern California haunters.

Though we’ve known about how amazing Casket Creek is (it’s been around for five years), we’ve never been able to attend due its opening dates being so close to Halloween. This was our first visit, and we were thoroughly impressed. This Western Ghost Town is like an undead Deadwood...a place where we too could potentially ride a ghost horse into the dim moonlight.
