review: club fear presents: twisted manor II

The sad fact is that a lot of haunts come and go. As much as we would like the good ones to stick around forever, there comes a point where most either grow out of it or move on. And while one of our favorite Santa Clarita haunt destinations, the DC Comics inspired “Club Fear” has made 2021 its last season - it will continue to live on in our memories.

Club Fear was created by Jason Shields in 2016. A lifelong comic book fan, Shields incorporates numerous nods to DC Comics throughout his maze, and many scenes feel like a reinvisioned Gotham. The maze, built within the front yard of a friend’s house, takes you through the home of a serial killer clown named Rellik. The maze features synchronized lighting, sound effects, trap doors, switchbacks, and incredible scare actors. The sets and props are stunning, and haunters who go deep will be thrilled to hear the narrator who is voiced by Derek Young of VanOaks Cemetery & Props.

As we waited in line outside the haunt, within a cul de sac closed off to traffic, we felt extremely sad knowing that Club Fear is in its final year. Our sadness was lifted by the music and demented clowns running amok - creating a festive atmosphere in the street. We also found great comfort in learning that Shields is planning on opening up a larger scale haunt in San Diego for the next season.

What will Jason Shields come up with next? We have yet to see. If his future endeavors match the high calibre of Club Fear, then it looks like we will have to start driving down to San Diego every haunt season.
