review: dark harvest

Horror classics like “Children of the Corn”, “Freddie vs Jason”, and even “Goodnight Mommy” have always used cornfields to represent the unknown. When we think of these fields we often associate them with states like Iowa - and not California. However, for the past two years, Perdition and The Fleshyard have teamed up to create “Dark Harvest”, a massive haunt taking up two acres of the cornfield at Frosty’s Forest & Pumpkin Patch in Chino Hills.

The atmosphere here is festive as there are pumpkins, photo ops, and carnival rides surrounding the cornfield. Once you are in line, scare actors emerge from the hidden shadows of the corn - interacting and frightening those brave enough to enter. You are then greeted by a very entertaining man who explains the rules of the cornfield in a tone that is filled with dry comedy - ending his talk by saying that those who dare enter the cornfield will never come back out.

Once inside you really get the best of what Perdition (which is usually a home haunt) and The Fleshyard have to offer. Under the banner of Dark Harvest these two individual haunts have teamed up as a larger collective experience. Their skills, which have always been great, have been even more finely tuned - offering the best in gore, scares, and set design. Among the corn there are demented alligator puppets, evil aliens, demonic scarecrows, and tons of bloody guts smeared all over the sets which act as horrifying intermissions along your travels through the maze.

Dark Harvest is a fantastic journey for those who enjoy the gorier thrills of haunting. While combining haunts can sometimes be incohesive, the merger between these two powerhouses is well-matched and therefore creatively perfect. If you find yourself in Chino Hills, we highly recommend a visit to Dark Harvest to meet all the ghouls hidden among the corn.
