review: into the black

We are huge fans of Larry and Cheryl Bones. They are the masterminds behind Boneyard Effects, Inc., a local company that creates creatures (prosthetics, makeup, costume design) and sets (prop fabrication, set design and painting) and brings to life haunted mazes and attractions. Boneyard has been a staple of the Southern California haunt scene since the mid 1990s, and as of 2017 have offered their own very unique Halloween maze: “Into the Black”. The concept of the Into the Black maze is from one of the Bones’s original films bearing the same name. As you journey through the maze you will enjoy a very suspenseful and surreal experience which is unlike anything you will find in other haunted attractions.

Traditionally, mazes rely on creating scares from constant sources of stimulus that include scare actors, sounds, and lighting. However, Into the Black goes in the complete opposite direction - utilizing unsettling, quiet ambient sounds and very creepy and darkened rooms and characters. The scare actors of this haunt are in a league of their own and will silently sneak up behind you - only to reveal their presence with a low guttural sound.

The set design of Into the Black is spectacular and filled with decaying Victorian motifs. Dark hallways are illuminated by muted candle light and smoke seeps into the rooms as shadows follow your movements. Along your journey through this tenebrous world you will come upon demonic chapels, spine-chilling swamps, and blue moonlight infused rooms.

Into the Black is truly an amazing haunt experience that will leave you paralyzed with fear and wonder. Located in Rancho Cucamonga, Into the Black would be paired well with a visit to nearby haunts: Samhain's Lot and Hellsir.
