review: the haunted rose presents the color out of space

A seasonal favorite of ours has always been Ryan Banfield’s home haunt: “The Haunted Rose”. Usually only open for a few days around Halloween, this haunt is consistently transforming and bringing to life stories from the H.P. Lovecraft universe. The build and details of this haunt are always superb and among the best of the season. This comes as no surprise considering that Banfield runs PROliFX and has worked on countless blockbuster films (Iron Man, Avatar) and for world-renowned companies like Knott’s Berry Farm, The Walt Disney Company, and Cirque Du Soleil.

Typically, The Haunted Rose experience is a walkthrough containing mutated actors, psychedelic lighting, and magnificent props - however for the 2020 season Banfield has opted for a live show. You start off by walking through the fictional town of Arkham, Massachusetts, where you will see objects and ephemera that reference different Lovecraft characters and stories. As you approach the front yard you are immersed in a psychedelic world in which you become acquainted with the infamous events of The Color Out of Space.

The centerpiece of this display is a meteor: a giant fabricated rock that sits in the yard - changing colors and transforming everything around it into a world of cosmic horror. The actors and synchronization of this show were completely breathtaking - so much so that at the end of the performance the audience erupted into a thunderous applause.

Ryan Banfield is such an incredible artist and storyteller. Year after year he brings us some of the most stunning haunts for those lucky enough to visit. We look forward to delving deeper into his creative universe and can’t wait to see what new, eldritch tales he brings us next Halloween season.
