review: pirate’s cave: curse of calico jack

There is nothing like leaving a haunt speechless. Being at a loss for words only happens when an experience has exceeded all expectations and defied what possibilities you even thought were possible. We are happy to report that after our visit last weekend to the Pirate’s Cave we were indeed left without words - wondering if we maybe experienced one of the best home haunts of the season?

The Pirate’s Cave has been around for years and it is the creation of the father and son team of teenage Jacob Larson and his Dad, Dave - with the help of family and friends. This haunt follows a very cohesive storyline in which you learn of the cursed treasure that mystical Pirates have hidden deep within the mines below the earth's surface. Once exploration begins you will experience theme park quality acting, props, lighting, and scares.

The maze begins with a very impressive, smoke filled hallway that feels endless in size. As you walk down this massive introduction to the haunt's first room, the elevator, you are filled with suspense and awe amid the rocky walls that are illuminated only by dim, flickering lights. Once inside the elevator you go downwards, deep into the haunted mines, where you run into numerous well-acted scenes that are complete with projections, dropping floors, animatronic sea monsters and an overall unbelievably immersive experience created by Jacob and Dave Larson’s incredible imaginations.

If you want to see one of the best haunts of the season then do not miss this one. The work behind this haunt is incredibly impressive and completely buries all of its previous (and great) incarnations into the dust. The Pirate’s Cave now feels more at home in a place like Disneyland than in the modest environment of a home in Orange County.
