review: reign of terror

We went to our last haunt in 2019, and a lot has changed since the pandemic wrecked the plans of hundreds of haunted houses. This year’s haunt season will bring some big surprises and new adventures, and we were fortunate to get an early peek with Reign of Terror’s “Halfway to Halloween” celebration last weekend.

For those who don’t already know, Reign of Terror has become one of the most legendary Southern California haunts since its inception in 1999. Along with its peers, like Rotten Apple 907 and Beware the Dark Realm, RoT has continuously raised the bar for what a haunted house experience should be. RoT’s founder, Bruce Stanton, has a unique vision and an industrious production ethic - creating a world of suspense and horror that spans across 125 rooms within 9 themed sections. Stanton’s use of lighting, olfactory effects, original characters, animatronics, and superb art direction takes you on a wild adventure that lasts over half an hour.

In 2019, RoT moved into a new space inside of their home at Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks. There was an attempt to premiere their new location in 2020, but the event was cancelled. Therefore, we were even more eager to see what new scares were in store for us this year. We loved the additional room layouts and the restructuring of the mazes, along with many new surprises which we won’t spoil for you.

What makes Reign of Terror superior to larger scale haunts like Universal is that it offers a voyage through a world unique to Stanton and his team’s imagination. Without the interference of IP’s or sponsors, who tend to get in the way of what makes haunted houses so special, Reign of Terror is free to perpetually create new worlds within its domain - entertaining and enthralling visitors year after year.
