review: delusion presents: reaper’s remorse

For the past decade, Delusion has been the frontrunner in the world of interactive theater. The event’s creator, Jon Braver, is a master of this genre as he combines aspects of Victorian horror, suspense, sci-fi, stunts, special effects, and puzzle solving to truly immerse you into a world that holds his unmistakable signature.

This year's play, “Reaper’s Remorse”, is Delusion’s first location outside of the major Los Angeles area. Taking place in the historic Phillips Mansion in Pomona, Reaper’s Remorse takes you deep into the world of Esther Phillips (a character named after the widow of the Phillips Mansion). Esther is a strange collector who invites you to her party where things go downhill very quickly.

Everything about Reaper’s Remorse was top-notch. Throughout this extensive production you interact with superbly talented actors and witness dazzling effects all the while travelling through a dilapidated mansion in order to find your way out. Braver’s crew of actors suspend all disbelief as you feel like you are in their world, being dragged around fantastic sets that blur the line between reality and fabrication. Throughout your travels you will be immersed in special effects that combine perfectly synchronized light and sound in order to make the illusion that more real. We won’t give too much away because we hope that everyone can enjoy this experience for themselves.

While we loved Braver's previous production,The Blue Blade, which took place at Club Fais Do-Do in the West Adams district; we feel that Braver’s creativity really thrives in creepy old mansions like the Phillips historic house. It was wonderful to enjoy the feel of Delusion’s earlier incarnations with the added experience and knowledge that Braver has accrued with newer productions. Our night at Reaper’s Remorse was absolutely incredible and we greatly urge everyone to go. Ticket prices are on the high end, but if you can afford to spend the money we guarantee that you will enjoy a night out that will give you a lasting sense of otherworldliness and exhilaration.
