REVIEW: Micheltorena Manor

For a long time. Silverlake's Micheltorena Elementary School has been hosting Pumpkinfest. This annual fundraiser is filled with Halloween crafts, fun activities, a spooky photo booth, and live music. However, the reason we have always attended is for their haunted house. Year after year they change themes, with past events including everything from a maze about pollution to one that was a brilliant take on Harry Potter. This year’s haunted maze entitled, "The Micheltorena Manor", was a tribute to the Disneyland dark ride classic, "The Haunted Mansion".

The entrance to the maze was located at the bottom of the stairs leading to the school’s basement. We were immediately greeted by a skeletal horse, manor staff, and our phantom guide: an elementary school student who was dressed from head to toe in a Victorian suit. Our guide brought us through the maze where we encountered an ethereal Madame Leota speaking from within her crystal ball, a couch with glowing eyes hidden in its crevices, a neon statue of a knight with moving eyes, and more. Our favorite part was the climactic ending, where we came face to face with the Hitchhiking Ghosts. The illusion, which was something we have never seen, used flashing lights to illuminate real children, dressed as the infamous ghosts, who were swaying back and forth behind the glass covering of the 2D flat.

This maze is always created with a heartfelt love for the holiday while showcasing the creativity of staff, students, and parent volunteers. During Pumpkinfest you are not only celebrating Halloween, you are also helping fundraise for the school. We are always excited to attend Pumpkinfest and cannot wait until next year to see what new, great ideas the faculty and students cook up to scare us!
