review: rotten apple 907 presents: haunted manor

Our favorite haunt, Rotten Apple 907 (created by the Meyers family), is an annual maze that has been capturing the imagination and amazement of visitors for decades. When they announced that they were doing a yard display instead of a maze this season, we were very curious to see how they would live up to their stellar reputation. True to form, they exceeded our highest expectations with their newest creation: Haunted Manor. This display is truly in a league of its own and is completely unlike anything we have ever seen.

Haunted Manor is a live show tribute to Disneyland's Haunted Mansion - with a Meyers family twist. The walls of each room of the manor open towards the street, offering performances that showcase memorable characters and vignettes from the Haunted Mansion. Madame Leota, the Black Widow Bride, the Organist, and the Coffin Occupant are all there. The soundtrack of the performances is an enjoyable combination of samples from the dark ride mixed in with customized homemade audio. This great auditory blend adds to the unique quality of this experience and enhances the signature Rotten Apple touch.

As we watched the performances we had a difficult time distinguishing which characters were real and which were animatronic - emphasizing how incredible this haunt is. Our favorite scene was the Madame Leota seance. The lights of the room come up and you see an actual, talking head in the crystal ball as animal skeletons fly around in circles. This scene is complemented by remarkable puppetry and beautiful lighting.

Without a doubt, the biggest star of this year's attraction is The Black Widow Bride. At first she is hiding behind curtains (reminiscent of the Evil Queen who appears in the top window of her castle in Disneyland) until she makes her appearance with her beating, illuminated heart - a captivating special effect that we couldn’t figure out. During the grand finale she parts the curtains once again and starts to dance along with the haunt’s other characters. This dance performance is complete with rave lights and a remix of the Haunted Mansion theme.

Rotten Apple has once again achieved the impossible - rising up against the doom of the pandemic and creating one of their best haunt experiences yet. Haunted Manor is exceptionally enthralling, proving once again that Rotten Apple is possibly the best haunted attraction to ever exist in the Los Angeles area.
